Subject: [*] 3D Dots
I'm pleased to announce the latest release of "3D Dots" vers.1.1
for the Macintosh.
3D Dots is a program for creating your own random dot stereograms.
Random dot stereograms are three-dimensional images, made of dots,
that require no special glasses for viewing. Once you have learned
how to view them, the images contained in stereograms appear almost
magically to pop off the page. To view them, all you need is binocular
vision, patience and perhaps a sense of humor.
In 3D Dots, you can create your own random dot stereograms using
shapes (rectangles, circles and triangles) and text. You can change
dot patterns as well as the "elevation" of objects (how far they
appear to pop off the page).
3D Dots works like a drawing program. You can create objects, move
them around and erase them. You can save the images for editing in
other drawing programs, copy them into the clipboard or print them
out directly from 3D Dots.
Features:
* Easy paint/draw program-like image creation
* Multiple backgrounds dot patterns
* Visual alignment dots
* Image height control
* Copy/Save/Print
* Extensive help
* Explanation of Random Dot Stereogram theory
System Requirements:
* System 7 minimum
* Monitor with at least 640 X 400 pixels resolution
3D Dots is shareware. Registration is $19.00. See the shareware
notice inside the program for details.
The file itself is enclosed in binhex format. You should save this
entire message, download it to your Macintosh and run a de-binhexing
program on it. Stuffit Classic, Compact Pro and Binhex 4.0 all have
this feature.
Thanks and enjoy!

Subject: [*] Address Book 3.6.3
This is the latest version of AdressBook, 3.6.3, given to me by
the author to pass on. It is an essential utility for managing,
sorting and otherwise manipulating addresses and phone numbers.
It can dial the number for you, log it if so chosen, etc. It is
rather flexible at printing envelopes (including Post Office Bar
Codes), labels and Rolodex cards.
Support shareware, pay your fees! :)
and enjoy.

Subject: [*] Applicon 2.3 - part 1 of 4
Applicon 2.3 - part 1 of 4
This is Applicon 2.3, an upgrade to Applicon 2.2 and earlier versions.
Applicon is a utility for System 7. It places a
"tile" on your desktop for each running application listed
under the Application menu. Each tile displays the icon and
name of "its" application. Clicking the tile brings its
application to the front, the same as if you'd selected that
app from the Application menu. Option-clicking will hide the
current app's windows before bringing the selected app to the
front.
Applicon is nice because you can see what's running without
pulling down a menu, and because the tiles are easier to manage
than menu items: you don't have to stop and read, and you don't
have to be too precise with the mouse.
This release, version 2.3, fixes a few bugs and introduces three
new features, including an option to "Always Hide Others."
All users are recommended to upgrade.
Applicon is a fully compatible System 7.0 application that shows
how some things that used to require INITs can now be done with
a small app. You can launch Applicon at any time, but it's most
convenient to simply drop it into your Startup Items folder
inside your System Folder. It features full on-line help,
including Balloon Help. Applicon requires System 7.0 or later.
It is free.

Recently (IM 11-151) the Think C 5.04 source to an update of the classic
(IMHO)
arcade game was posted to Sumex. I've done nothing with it other than compile
it. It runs well on a Quadra 700 and an old Mac II with a 19" monitor and a
slow 1024x766 video card (full screen!). I include the application and those
parts of the documentation that I could read with TeachText or Word 5.1.
I'd like to thank Juri Munkki and the others for making this available.

Enclosed is Basic Black version 1.2, the latest version of my freeware
screen saver.
Basic Black is a tiny screen saver that works with both System 6 and 7. It
operates as a Control Panel, so it's easy to configure. It requires a
very small amount of memory, and takes up very little processor time, so
your applications will operate at full speed, even when the screen is
asleep.
Basic Black now supports Powerbooks, and offers a bouncing analog clock
in addition to the default "Basic Black" look.
Source code is available upon request, and will soon be distributed on

Subject: [*] cp - ObiWan 4.0.1
ObiWan 4.0.1 is a general help system. You can create several
databses and ObiWan will let you rapidly find information from
them. It displays the information by temporarily taking over
several lines at the bottom of the main screen, so the information
can be displayed at any time in any program. Portions of the
information can then be sent to the front window as if you had
typed it. The main use of all this is to access the programming
database created from Apple's PInterfacesHelp file, which includes
the procedures, traps, global variables and errors available up
to System 7. If you've seen Online Companion, it works similar
to that, but includes all the System 7 information.
Three databases are included, the Force database which has all the
System 7 programming information, a Words database which is just a
list of words, useful for checking spelling, and a Perl database which
lists all the Perl commands.
Any programmer with a meg of disk space available and access to
the PInterfacesHelp file should definitely have a look at this (IMNVHO :-).
The normal use is to figure out the parameters of various calls, for
example, if I want to know the parameters for HOpen, I can get them
pasted in like this:
OSErr:=HOpen(vRefNum_INTEGER,dirID_LONGINT,fileName_Str255,
permission_SignedByte,VAR_refNum_INTEGER);
(in either C or Pascal format)
This is a minor upgrade to fix a few small problems, and include
the database with the control panel to simpilfy installation.
I hope it proves as useful to you as it does to me,
Peter.

so here I go again:
Here is Dali clock version 2.0. This clock:
* Has a round, resizable face.
* Lets the user place any number (or string) anywhere on the face of the
clock.
* Will now follow whatever numbering scheme was entered -- so it will
travel clockwise and counter clockwise, or in zigzag too.
* features full color.
* a second hand (doesn't sound like much, but the original lacked that)
* and for System 7 users: can switch to the background after being
launched - useful if put in the Startup Items folder.

applications are closed correctly.
There is even an option for responding automatically to the

Subject: [*] Excalibur - Spelling Checker for Text and LaTeX
This is release 1.4.1 of Excalibur. 8/4/93
Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. It also
does a fairly good job with plain TeX files. It reads files of type
TEXT and it is smart enough to ignore most LaTeX commands and a fair
number of plain TeX commands. Since it just ignores these commands, it
will also serve quite nicely as a spelling checker for any TEXT file
that doesn't contain any LaTeX or TeX commands. (It is not completely
accurate to say that Excalibur ignores LaTeX commands. It will process
any arguments that contain text). Excalibur will also spell check the
clipboard, making it useful as a spelling checker for text editors,
mail programs, etc.
Excalibur is a stand-alone application that we have tested with both
OzTeX and Textures documents. The fact that it is a stand-alone
application should not present any inconvenience since it works with
MultiFinder under System 6 and it is System 7 aware.
You will need System 6.0.4 or higher to run Excalibur.
If you are running System 7 or greater, there is balloon help.
Excalibur is free.
Version 1.4.1 includes the following changes.
- Repaired several minor bugs including better error handling under
low memory conditions.
- You can now convert larger text files into dictionaries. If you
create a really large dictionary you may not be able to read it with
an older version of Excalibur.
- Excalibur knows about the conventions in german.sty. If you turn on
the option to treat " as if it were \", Excalibur will also know about
the hyphens and quotes defined in german.sty.
Version 1.4 includes the following changes.
- You may now spell check the contents of the clipboard. You may save
the results back to the clipboard too.
- You may now teach Excalibur about new commands and environments that
you have defined.
- Excalibur now handles the \cite command properly.
- Many smaller changes too.
- If you have an older version of Excalibur, you will need to rebuild
your desktop in order to see the new icon for definition files.

CHANGES IN MACWRITE PRO VERSION 1.0v4
MacWrite Pro 1.0v4 corrects incompatibilities in previous versions of
MacWrite Pro 1.0, and includes these changes:
1. Addition of the ClarisWorks 1.0 Mac Text Translator.
2. Improved handling of large files containing graphics, which have
been heavily edited.
3. Improved handling of files with graphics in the header.
4. Compatibility with the MacODA XTND Translator, available from Apple
Computer, Inc.
5. Improved compatibility when printing EPS graphics under non-US
System Software.
6. Improved printing to QuickDraw printers.
7. Better performance when inserting a Table on a Classic running
System 6.0.
8. Improved behavior with converted MacWrite II documents when no
print driver is selected in the Chooser.
In addition, MacWrite Pro 1.0v4 will now open MacWrite Pro documents that
may not open correctly using the normal Open. command. To use this
feature:
1. Hold the Option key down while you select Open. from the File menu
2. Select the "Text" format from the Show: popup menu at the bottom of
the Open dialog
3. Select the document you want to open and click the Open button
The progress dialog will appear briefly, then your document will open in a
new window (note that all formatting and graphics are removed, and there
may be extraneous characters interspersed with the text). The text is now
available to be copied and pasted into a new document.
Four files have been changed:
o MacWrite Pro 1.0v4
o TableEditor 1.0v2 (ADDit)
o Claris XTND Bridge 2.0v2
o Read Me (these Release Notes, 1.0v4)
One new file has been added:

BUG FIX VERSION (OVER 5.0)
------------------------
Fixes the awful bug that if you ever hit the power key, babysmash acts
as if you are holding down a key - forever!
MAJOR CHANGES TO THE OLD VERSION (4.0)
--------------------------------
You CAN'T break out of the program by using the mouse in any way!
(as you may know this was a MAJOR problem with the old version)
Makes use of your entire screen whatever the size!
Saves your preferances when you quit! (Convenient)
Added a little baby fist cursor!
Added tons more sounds!
Can clear the screen with Flower-c (and try Flower-m-e for a
self-portrate)
GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO BABYSMASH!
-----------------------------------
BabySmash is a shareware application that is for keeping your young
kids happy without them accidentally dragging your word processor into
the trash can. It basically just puts up random shapes and plays random
sounds when your kid smashes on the keyboard (baby smash?) I know it sounds
really stupid, and I'll admit it's my first real Mac program, but it's
surprisingly catchy to those under the age of 5. I am amazed at how well it
holds their attention. Anyway, it's shareware, so you have nothing to lose
by trying. If you like it, you should send me something - $10 or at least a
postcard if you're on a real tight budget.

Subject: [*] Obolus 1.0.2
This is an updated version of Obolus. The original Obolus 1.0, posted
here a few weeks ago, had some problems running on 68000-based Macs,
and with System 6. These problems now have been fixed.
The following is a copy of the original note accompanying Obolus 1.0,
kindly posted here by Charles Mingo:
Obolus 1.0.2 is a mail program, designed to complement the Charon
mailer program, which was posted to sumex-aim recently.
Charon is designed to work with a "reader" program (eg, CounterPoint
or Alice), to allow a Mac user to operate as a Fido "point", calling
into a Fido hub to pick up and deliver mail and news, using the
Fido file transmission protocols.
Obolus is an adjunct to Charon, which allows Charon to properly
extract the outgoing mail and news from CounterPoint, including
the ability to compress outgoing mail. Use of Obolus allows
Charon and CounterPoint to function as a fully integated "point"
package.
Both Obolus and Charon may be freely distributed and used.
Please note that any questions about Obolus should be directed to the
author's
new address at qsi@nu91.wlink.nl. The old address, qsi@contrast.wlink.nl
should
work for a few weeks yet, but it is generally slower than the new one.

OK, here it is again. The new and improved Omega SANE patcher, with
a notice about the glory of Apple code included. I believe that this
should be better, for I eschewed the use of Stuffit this time, in favor
of compactor. I even managed to shrink it a bit more...
[Omega SANE patcher -- part 1 of 4]
Are you getting the best math performance from your Mac?
Chances are the answer is "no." Why?
Apple released a little-publicized version of their SANE
routines, known as "Omega SANE." These routines are faster
and more precise than the standard SANE.
Apple included these in System 7.0.1 but then removed them
>From System 7.1 for no adequately stated reason.
If you have an FPU-equipped Macintosh (including '030 accelerators
for those of you with 68000-based machines) you can make use of
this application.
This is version 1.2 which fixes a couple of problems with
compatibility and stupidity (mine).

Script Tools contains a series of AppleScript additions which add
functionality
to the AppleScript language. Version 1.1 of Script Tools adds the
following
new commands to AppleScript:
Choose Folder This command presents a standard file
selection
dialog which allows
the user to select a
folder.
Choose New File This command presents a standard file
selection
dialog permitting the
user to name a new
file.
Choose Several Files This command presents a modified standard file
selection dialog box
allowing the user to
choose
several files at one
time.
Choose Several Folders This command is similar to Choose Several
Files
except that it permits
the selection of
folders
instead of files.
Get Default Folder
Set Default Folder These two commands allow your scripts
to get and
set the default folder
and volume used in
Choose
File and Folder
commands.
Shutdown Shuts down and optionally restarts
the Macintosh
Compile Regular Expression
Match Regular Expression
Substitute Regular Expression
These three commands
allow you to perform
text
pattern matching
operations within
AppleScript.
Open File, Close File, Create File, Delete File
Read File, Write File
Get File Length, Lengthen File
Get File Position, Position File
This series of
commands allows your
AppleScript
scripts to manipulate
simple text files
directly
without the aid of a
scriptable editor
application.
The package also contains some example AppleScript scripts which illustrate
the use of these new commands.
Requirements:
Script Tools is distributed as a BinHexed compressed StuffIt archive.
You must have System 7 or later and AppleScript 1.0 or later installed on
your
Macintosh to make use of the software in this package. A Word Processor
capable of reading MS Word 5 format files is required to display the
documentation (you can also use the Open Dictionary command in the
AppleScript
Script Editor to view a breif descrition of each Script Tools command).

What Shutdown Delay basically does is setting up a dialog at
Restart/Shutdown time which gives the user four choices:
1. WAIT for the chosen command to be automatically completed
after a specified time interval;
2. CANCEL and smoothly return to the caller application;
3. RESTART (you can always turn a Shutdown in a Restart);
4. SHUT DOWN (turn power off or safe-shutdown alert as
usual);
5. FORCE QUIT attempts to return to the Finder (this can
sometimes recover from system crashes if you get to the
dialog after the restart button of the error alert).
This release is able to cooperate with Fabrizio Oddone's
DarkShutdown 1.1.1 (a DarkSide 4.0 module).

What will it do?
* It will read several graphics formats, or any format that you have a
Claris XTND translators for.
* Option to convert any color image to B&W bitmap, using Dithering if Color
QuickDraw is installed
* allow you to select area or whole picture to be saves as a X11 Bitmap,
PICT or EPS file.
* If QuickTime(tm) is installed, it will also allow you to play quicktime
movies and PICT. I admit it is of very limited use, but it was just to try
out quicktime routines.
* Supports Cut, Copy to Clipboard, Paste).
* Contains on-line help (accessed from Apple Menu, or System 7's help memu).
Things to do and limitations:
* limited testing on non-system 7 machines.
(Tested on Classic, IIsi, LC, Mac Portable, IIci).
* Limited B&W Paint editing features, sorry no color editing...
(I need to convert tool palettes to Floating windows).
* need to add System 7 balloon help
* printing does not print original picture, it prints the converted B&W
picture.
Translators that I have written (as of April 5th, 1993):
TIFF (IBMpc to Macintosh) v1.0 (AFE)
EPSF (IBMpc to Macintosh) v1.02 (AFE)
WordStar to RTF v1.02 (AFE)
dBase II, III, & IV to CSV v1.0.4 (AFE)
Windows (.BMP) to PICT2 V1.02 (AFE & XTND)
StartUp Screen V1.01 (XTND)
If you uses these translators, please send $10.00US / Translator used to
the above address.
I would like to thank all the people who have sent me shareware fee's (yes
some people are honest)!
* XTND translators which require Claris XTND System and applications that
support XTND (Claris XTND System is available in the Claris Works 2.0 Demo
package, and BBEdit package).
* AFE translators which require Apple File Exchange (AFE) applications.
Found on System 7 TidBits Disk or System 6's 800k Utilities 2 disk, or
System 6 's 1.4M System Additions Disk.
Note: If you need other AFE or XTND translators written send me a note, I
may write it.
I am testing a AFE Translator for PICT to B&W bitmap format of .BMP.
I will be looking at updating, EPSF AFE translator to support converting
ibmpc TIFF preview images, and Converting Macintosh PICT preview images to
IBMpc TIFF preview images (when I find time - Oct./Nov. time frame).

My original query under this heading did not explain the problem too
clearly and was somewhat ambiguous to boot. The font which
deteriorates in not that in the menubar (Chicago) but the font for
views which is set to (the default?) Geneva 10. And the
'deterioration' involves the letters slowly distorting and losing
their shape and/or partially overlapping or merging. However there is
no gross change in font size.

[stuff deleted]
I have had a similar problem- I detected it only with SuperClock
(4.something) using truetype fonts for the time. Finally figured out that
when all available memory is allocated to a program (meaning the finder
heap cannot grow any), the font would get blocky and eventually revert to
Geneva- I think the system decided to stop rendering the font in order to
save memory. This would happen right before I would start getting the 'not
enough memory to keep window X open...' messages. It never happened with
any other text in the finder, but convievably could. I'm guessing you have
a truetype font selected and are running out of memory. Solution? Buy more
RAM :) (sound like tech support for Microsoft, don't I?) I'd look at your
system heap- there are a few utilities on sumex for this- and see if
anything is running into one another. Hope this helps.

Try to figure out if it starts happening right after you start or
quit some application. If that is so, maybe you need to get the latest

Try removing your tried'n'true bells and whistles, one at a time,
and see if the problem goes away. Maybe you could reinstall your system
if it was not an extension.

A question for folks familiar with Claris' Public Folder.
I have been successfully running an appletalk net using Public Folder

I've loaded the extension into the extensions folder set it up in the

The path to the folder as :desktop:Public Folder:

and a folder on the desktop named "Public Folder".
The extension evidently works because (from the SE/30) I can see other

Recently I've been using some applications, including some games,

Yes, it exists. You really should subscribe to comp.sys.mac.games. :)
You should be able to get it from your favorite mail-order software
company. However, I've heard that there maybe some problems in the
distribution. The publisher, Microprose, has been bought out by
Spectrum Holobyte. Some people report having been told that it is
no longer available. Which seems odd, since it's a good game, even
if it is a IBM port.
If you do get a copy, there's a Civ FAQ floating around the archives.

In all cases when I connect the disk to the pb160 the pb160 won't boot anymore

Connecting the disk when the pb160 was succesfully booted from it's internal

Subject: Downloading overlong names in archive (A)
Dear Netters,
In reply to recent info-mac postings:
For those who have found some files having names too long to download
there is a solution. There is a terminal emulator that can alleviate
this
problem. So far, as tested, one needs on the archive end a Gopher
1.2 or later client
on a VAX/VMS, along with the ability to communicated with Kermit.
Yes I know Kermit can be slow as h***, but it will reduce any
filename that
is too long into a Macintosh file name when run over this terminal
emulator: QuickLink II. All underscores _ are changed to Xs, and
the last
letters are truncated out. QuickLink II is made by Smith Micro
Software
(P. O. Box 7137 Huntington Beach, CA 92615). Revision 2 is the
version I
got with my modem. All files get downloaded into an ASCII format
which can be
converted using Binhex 4.0, Stuffit 3.03, or Compact Pro. Of course
any word processor with ASCII or Text converters can read text files
downloaded with it.
I don't know if the software is available alone commercially, but it
does
come with the QuickTel Xeba 9696XV.
Write to Smith Micro to find out where you can get mail order copies
of
their software.
QuickLink II is a mixed blessing of sorts IMHO, it won't allow you to
use the
Delete key to delete characters you type (in VT100 emulation),
but as with most Macintosh terminal emulators it will allow you to
copy from a file straight to the screen, or from your clipboard
straight to
the screen so you can edit your file and then paste it on the prompt
or
editor that you are emulating.
It supports Xmodem, Ymodem & Kermit as well as VT100 (very limited),
VT52,
and TTY emulation. Anything I comment above, I have tested,
otherwise,
feel free to test your own luck on.
Disclaimer: I use this software sparingly, when the only option is to
use
Kermit. Still Kermit is very reliable once the transfers are
completed.
I have no idea what the separate price would be for QuickLink II,
and
suggest you ask Smith Micro.
Their address again is:
Smith Micro Software, Inc.
P.O. Box 7137
Huntington Beach CA 92615
Also I make no claims on the part of QuickTel, as that is my primary
modem.
Though it has been known to be riddled with errors on my downloads,
I still get 80% of my downloads fairly decently. And no I am not
planning on getting another modem, as all others either are twice as
much in cost for the same speed, using the same chip the QuickTel has
(i.e. the Zoom Modem).
I got it at a place where this was the last QuickTel they had in
stock.
Shows me, that I shouldn't fall for that claim again.
There had to be something wrong when a $280 modem was being sold for
$160.
Still it serves its purpose.
Hope this helps alleviate the headache of archive names longer than 31
characters. In addition it shows that if you get a modem that sounds
too
cheap, then it probably is.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU
-----
I say test, as I am a singular user always trying to fix these bugs
that keep cropping up on my system. Not to mention Bus Errors, System
Falls in Application Heap, and Address errors. CRC @ 0 Error loves my
modem, and tries to ruin any downloads done over Telnet. Therfore if
I find something usefull, I will post it on the net. The plus side of
all these errors is I get a novice's view of how each system really
works. Happy Netting:-)

The recently released GlobalFax Duo software for the Express Modem

- Manual Dialing does not work. Apparently, the software times out before
it will connect to anything. According to Global Village's Tech Support,
this a result of the Apple Comm Toolbox taking too long to initialize. No
workaround is available at this time.
- Numerous users have reported problems with the software crashing after
turning off the express modem. In addition, the software APPEARS to
initialize the modem into a receive-fax mode, even when it is not set up
that way by the user. According to GV, this is just a faulty indicator,

Subject: Hard Disk Partition utility
I have my hard drive (a Quantum 105) partitioned into two separate
partitions:
One partition is the 'boot' partition, and holds only the System Folder,
and multiple extensions, control panels, sounds, fonts, etc. The second
partition holds all applications and data files.
I originally felt that 10 Mbyte would be sufficient to contain all system
resources. However, moving from 6.0.5 -> 6.0.7 -> 6.0.8 -> 7.0 -> 7.0.1
and the addition of TrueType fonts, sound files, control panels, etc. has
chewed up almost all of that partition.
I would like a utility that would allow me to alter the size of partitions
WITHOUT having to reformat the entire hard disk. Does something like this
exist? I would gladly pay commercial fees for this, since it would save
me a significant amount of time. I have no tape streaming device
attached, so my backup is contained on floppy diskettes.

A more controllable way to do the selection part is:
...
select after text of cd fld TextToSave
...
or, since the original poster just wanted to accumulate characters in a
field:
on mouseUp
put empty into cd fld TextToSave -- this clears the field
put "a" & "b" & "c" after cd fld TextToSave -- this puts no spaces betweeen
put "d" && "e" && "f" after cd fld TextToSave -- this seperates w/spaces
put return after cd fld TextToSave -- this makes a new line
end mouseup
all the other standard nouns (word 1, character 5, last line, char 3 of
word 2 of line 1, etc. etc. ad nauseum) should work with this
technique, as well as the standard relations (before, after, into,
etc.)
Disclaimer: I also only have Hypercard 2.x, so I make no claims about the
usability of this under 1.x.

>I want ot type a predetermined keystroke in this place or that place.
>Preferably on a seperate card (or stack) that would gradually >accumulate
the string of digits...
Darrah Chavey of Beloit College gave a solution in issue #157 of
Info-Mac. The solution works very well but having to go to the card where
the data is stored uses time. Another solution to the problem is
on mouseup
put "This is a test." & return after cd fld storeHere of cd 2 end
mouseup
The above script places your message (This is a test.) in a card field
called "storeHere" which is located on card 2 of the stack. The button
that placed this message here was located on card 1 of the stack I
constructed.
Note: The < & return > in the script places each message on its own line.
If you wish to have a string of responses w/o any seperation then just
take out the phrase < & return >.
I constructed and tested this script using HyperCard 2.1.

You can have as many Keybord layouts in your System as You Wish *If* you use
the international edition of the System.
What? -- You Don't have the International Edition? Well we can fix that,
using ResEdit.
1. Make a copy of your system file to work on.
2. Make another copy to put back if this does not work.
3. Have a bootable floppy system or alternate system drive
if this does not Work.
---End of warnnings ---
4. Start up Resedit, find your *copy* of the system file and open it.
5. Find a resource "itlc" in the system file (sixth line about 3 or four in).
6. Double click on "itlc" to open it.
7. There is only one line ID=0 Size=48 Double click to open that.
8. Scroll down to find "Always show Keybrd Icon".
9. In the US version its normally set to 0, Set it to 1.
10. Close all the windows Allow ResEdit to save the changes; quit ResEdit.
11. Replace Your Current System with the New System. (you can drag the old
system to the desktop, then put the new system in the system folder.
12. Reboot.
13. In between balloon help and the application menu you now have an
American flag. It is a pull down menu of your installed Keyboards.
14. Add other keyboards, the flag will change for each keyboard.

Subject: lazy Susan for PB (A)
The basic lazy susan hardware (also called a lazy susan) can be gotten fairly
cheaply in lots of sizes at any good hardware store. How fancy you make the
PB stand based on that is up to your own preferences and availability of
tools. At its simplest I think you could make something useable by attaching
pieces of cardboard to the two sides of the lazy susan. Or you could get
fanicer with a square of plywood or a piece of a board. I guess I would be
inclined to try a length of pine 1x12 ("shelf board") that's as long as the
powerbook, screw the lazy susan to the bottom if it, and maybe glue felt to
the top so the PB doesn't slide off as you spin it. Or if the dimensions
work out and you're handy with a router you could recess the board to fit the
base of the powerbook, so it fits in its own niche.
caveat: statements about availability of hardware and lumber are based on
experience in the U.S. Your mileage may vary.

I'm new to using gopher (just tried it for the first time a couple of weeks
ago), but I've found that it allows me to rename the *.hqx file I select to
download. E.g. when I grabbed [big-dummys-guide-to-internet.hqx] using gopher,
I actually grabbed it as [internetguide.hqx], the name I gave the file before
it downloaded. Perhaps this might be a viable option.

Frankly I dont think / know if it's possible to use two 3mB Apple RAM
cards in a Portable, even if you'd completely change the computer's
layout. The cards would still both respond to the same RAM address space,
I think.
I see the following solution for your friend:
- Sell one of the 3mB cards to a user who only has the 1mB on-board
- buy a RAM expansion card which goes into the PDS slot (that's the
slot at the extreme right).
There are PDS cards which can coexist with a card in the RAM slot.
Maximum RAM for backlit Portable is 8mB (non-backlit 9mB).
I got my card from a company called "Dynamic Engineering" somewhere in
California (don't have the address presently - but they advertise in the
classified section of MacWorld). I remember that the contact I had was Tim
Whetstone.
They have cards of all sizes (from 1 to 8 mB). You need to configure them
with jumpers to tell the card, how many RAM is already in the other slot,
etc. - but it's all well documented.
If you can't find the Address of Dynamic Engineering, send me a message
and I shall do an investigation in my archives at home.
Best regards, Christian.

Just drop the keyboard layout into your system folder, just as you would
do with a font, or an extension. It goes directly into the system file.
You then can select the keyboard in the control panel, and it is switched
without restarting. (What's the control panel name in an English language
system - keyboard? It's "Eingabe" in German).
The "Keyboard layout" documents are basically only "KCHR"-resources which
go into your system file, but nothing else is overwritten.
There are many of these documents on the Info-Mac CD and on sumex. But I
don't know, if Polish is there as well.

First a caveat of my own: I was a beta tester for NowCompress (NC). So
my objectivity may have been a bit compromised, but I *really* like
NowCompress. So let me respond to your question.
I run NC on a Quadra 700 with multiple drives and a PowerBook 170.
The best recommendation I can give any compression software is to
say that it does its job transparently and causes me no problems.
This is certainly true of NowCompress. It is so transparent that most
of the time I forgot it's even there (honestly!).
I like a lot better than Aladdin's SpaceSaver, which I used before
NowCompress. I have no experience with AutoDoubler so I can't compare
NowCompress to it. SAM has no problems dealing with NC compressed
files, which is not true of SpaceSaver.
On the downside, I feel that the drop down menu interface could be done
a little better. SpaceSaver changes it's menu according to the file-
such as whether or not the file is compressed. NowCompress, for the most
part keeps the same menu items (e.g selecting a compressed file doesn't
change compress to decompress as it does with SpaceSaver.) But this
is minor, particularly when you consider the fact that I have *never*
had a crash or file problem that I could attribute to NowCompress. As
they say in the Tums commercial, "I like that!" :-)

After having used TimesTwo, Stuffit, Superdisk & CompactPro, I am most
impressed with NowCompress. Decompression is very fast (for heavily-
redundant data, loading is actually faster than reading uncompressed
files from disk) and there is a very complete user interface.

Pegasus Mail is available in Dos, Windows, and Mac versions. It requires a
Novell Netware server and can work with MHS, but MHS is not required. It
supports internet mail via the NLM based Mercury email gateway running on
a Netware server or via the DOS based Charon gateway running on a separate

The source ftp repository of David Harris' software is tyr.let.rug.nl, and
the official U.S. site seems to be risc.ua.edu. It would be bad use of
network bandwidth if a lot of people transfer these files from New
Zealand, so the risc.ua.edu site would seem a better choice for North
American users. However, when I tried that site tonight, it was *very*
slow. So I did an Archie search and found the files at one of the big

0. What is The Tao of AppleScript?
The Tao of AppleScript is the first available book on the market about
AppleScript. Competition includes a book from Dan Shaeffer from Addison-Wesley
and a book from Danny Goodman from Brady. (Danny's is supposedly in the 750
page range.)
The Tao book includes a high density disk containing Apple's official
AppleScript software, as well as utilities and scripting additions written
specifically for the book. It is approximately 290 pages in length and is
published by Hayden.
Page layout design and cover art concept by Hans Hansen.
Written by Derrick Schneider.
Edited by Tim Holmes.
1. When is The Tao of AppleScript going to be available?
The book was first available at Macworld Expo Boston from BMUG and Hayden.
They were RUSH shipped there, so won't be in the BMUG offices
until the week following the Expo.
(Note: it is the ONLY AppleScript book available at Expo.)
2. How much does it cost?
The Tao of AppleScript retails for $24.95. BMUG will be selling it mail-order
and through our office for $20 (plus shipping) to members and
non-members. Look for it at your local bookstore. Or call 800-776-BMUG to
order.
3. What do I need to use AppleScript?
You will need to be running System 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1 or later. (If you are
running
7.0 or 7.0.1 you will need to install QuickTime 1.5 or better (QT 1.6 is
included on the disk) as 7.1 has
the Component Manager built into it while 7.0 and 7.0.1 does not and QT
provides it.
Four megs of RAM is the recommended minimum amount of RAM.

Subject: Trashcan Not Emptying??
Folks:
I have come up with a facinating problem. I no longer seem
to be able to empty my trash can if there are two items (and only
two items) in it. If there are two files (or two folders containing
any number of items) in the trash can and I go to empty it the
computer will tell me the TRASH IS EMPTY, yet the trash can is
fat and I can open the trash and see the two files (or folders).
The problem is facinating (but not fatal) since if I add one more
file (or folder) the trash will empty as normal. It will also
behave normally if there is only one file (or folder) in it.
I am have a wonderful little Powerbook 160 running System 7.1.
The problem started last Thursday while I was at Macworld Expo/Boston
(perchance the Powerbook is mad since I was lusting over a 660AV?) and
seemed to occur around the time (I honestly can't remember if it was
just before or after) I installed the AppleEvents and AppleScripts
extensions.
I have done the following (in the following order) to try to fix
the problem. Nothing has worked thus far.
I rebuilt the desktop.
I rebooted without extensions.
I reinstalled System 7.1 (that was an experience!).
I zapped the PRAM.
While the problem is only slightly annoying, I'm out of answers
at this point. It seems to me that this is a software glitch and that
the steps I took (especially the reinstallation of System 7.1) should
have solved it. Any suggestions would be quite appreciated and I
post the answer (if I recieve a fix) to the List if it is interested.

MacBinary format, so of course they need to be put through a program that will
de-binhex 5 them.
Thanks for the reply,

Subject: WindowsNT - an apology
Apologies to all for my myopic comments about WindowsNT - I obviously spend
far
too much time peering into the insides of Apple products and have allowed the
Gates crew to sneak up on me!
Thanks to all those who mailed me with the real gen - Windows NT *is* an
operating system, which doesn't need MS-DOS (or any other DOS for that matter)
to sit on.
Personally, I can't see why MS didn't offer Apple truck-loads of money to
license the Mac GUI, why re-invent the wheel? Does Windows (NT or 3.x) do
anything better than the Mac does (disregarding the hardware differences)?
Cheers

What will be the speed difference exactly between today high speed macs like
th
e Quadra 700/800/950 or the new Quadra 840av and the PowerPC ? Are there any
sp
eedometer ratings or application comparisons , like with statistical,
graphical
or other software ?
I ve read that it will be faster that a 486 50 hz intel processor. But then
the
re are even 150 hz machines and there are still slower than the new Alpha chip
>From DEC. How does the PowerPC compare to that ?
Thanks for answering my questions (if you have any answers :-)

Hi all,
Here's one for you hardware types:
All of our MAC CIs only seem to produce about -4.5v for a "true"
level on their serial ports, which is not quite enough to talk to our
DecServer 700 over a somewhat long line. Is there any way to change this level
(more negative) or will I have to build a line amplifier? Thanks, JD

- In S-mail land, does this mean the recipient could publish _photographs_
of the letters or display them in a museum?
-In E-mail land, does this mean the recipient can share a (Shift-Cmd-3)
Screen Shot of said message or display the message on his video display for
colleagues?

Since on the sun side there is a batch job that pings the mac frequently,
any interruption in the phone line results in dp to dial out again to
re-establish the link so that ping can go through. What is off is that
the PPP control panel still keeps DTR on and reports that the link is still up
despite the fact that the modems have hung up!
THus, I have to manually hard close PPP so that I can open it again
to wait for dp to call the mac. This is a minor nuisance but an odd behavior
that interested souls may want to check out.
Finally, I am wondering how the authorization configuration is used?
Can it be used in conjunction with dp-2.3?
